Dr. Karen Gear is a Martha’s Vineyard endodontist who is trained to work with the Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP®). With LANAP® laser gum surgery, a properly certified technician can operate on a patient’s gums without causing excessive pain or discomfort. In fact, LANAP® is so noninvasive that patients rarely experience the need for pain medication after the procedure. This means that only one to two days is needed off of work and, in some cases, less. Laser gum surgery is important because it allows patients to seek treatment without the fear of pain or lengthy recovery times. When treatment is provided in a timely manner, laser gum surgery can often reverse the effects of gum disease, preventing tooth loss and gum recession.
LANAP® laser gum surgery works by removing bacteria and diseased tissue with a laser instead of a blade. Because the laser targets only the diseased portions of the gum, the healthy areas are left unharmed. This results in less pain and less recession of the gum line. LANAP® laser gum surgery can also stimulate bone and tissue regrowth to reduce the risk of long term complications. Traditional gum surgery will often cause harm to the supporting bone and tissue structures, resulting in problems such as infection or tooth loss. To fix these problems, additional bone or gum grafting surgeries are required. LANAP® laser gum surgery, however, eliminates this risk by preventing damages to these areas.
LANAP® is the first and only laser gum surgery protocol to be cleared by the FDA. Its success can be attributed the advent of the PerioLase® MVP-7™. This is an innovative new laser that can distinguish between healthy and diseased gum tissue based on color and tint. It is because of this technology that laser gum surgery is able to preserve the health of the surrounding bone and gum tissue. As a leading Martha’s Vineyard endodontist, Dr. Gear has received an extensive education and is properly trained to use the PerioLase® MVP-7™.
