The LANAP® Procedure in Vineyard Haven, MA

LANAP® (Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure)

Basic Steps of the LANAP® Protocol

When you visit Dr. Karen Gear for gum disease treatment on Martha’s Vineyard, you can be sure you are receiving the best possible treatment. This is because Dr. Gear works with the Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP®) to give patients a comfortable gum disease treatment. LANAP® is a less invasive treatment option that offers patients increased convenience and minimal recovery time. In just six short steps, LANAP® can rid your mouth of gum disease and, in some cases, reverse any damaging effects that have occurred.

Steps of Gum Disease Treatment at Martha’s Vineyard Endodontics

  1. Measuring the loss of attachment – The first step in laser gum disease treatment is to measure the depth of your periodontal pockets using a small probe. This will tell us how much loss of attachment has occurred.
  2. Removing diseased tissue – A pulsed laser light will make a pass over the area to remove any bacteria and tissue that has been affected by gum disease. The laser will not harm any bone, tooth, or healthy gum tissue.
  3. Removing calculus deposits – Because the laser itself cannot remove calculus deposits from underneath the gum line, an ultrasonic scaler is used for this part.
  4. Forming the blood clot – The laser will make a second pass over to form a blood clot and stop any bleeding. This will also stimulate bone and tissue regrowth and, in some cases, reverse the damaging effects of gum disease.
  5. Recompressing the tissue – The tissue is then recompressed against the surface of the tooth. Laser gum disease treatment does not require sutures for this step.
  6. Checking for trauma – The final step in laser gum disease treatment is to adjust your bite and check for any signs of trauma.
It is very rare for patients to require pain medication after they receive laser gum disease treatment. This means that you can return to your daily routine immediately and miss almost no work.
